After Hours Service Although our office is unattended outside normal business trading hours, we have an emergency call centre, this is where our glaziers will be available on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week to attend to your emergencies. Our glaziers carry a selection of domestic & commercial glass on their vehicles, however some glass may not be available after hours so our glaziers will secure your premises securely with heavy duty board sheeting until glass is matched and discussed with the owners for next working day replacement.

Toughened Glass

General

The production of flat glass requires the molten silica based mix to be cooled slowly under carefully controlled conditions. This ‘annealing’ process removes most undesired stresses from the glass. Cooling occurs in an ‘annealing lehr’ (The ‘annealing lehr’ is the furnace after the float bath where the glass is slowly cooled to handling temperature). Annealed glass which has been heated to a temperature near its softening point and forced to cool rapidly under carefully controlled conditions is described as “heat treated glass”. This heat-treating process produces highly desirable conditions of induced stress, which result in additional strength, resistance to thermal stress and impact resistance. Heat strengthened glass is classified as either fully toughened or heat strengthened. Fully toughened glass must have a surface compression of 10,000 psi (or more) OR an edge compression of 9,700 psi or more.

Heat Treatment Principal

Glass can fracture when its surfaces or edges are placed into tension. Under these conditions inherent surface or edge fissures may propagate into visible cracks. The basic principle of the heat treating process is to create an initial condition of surface or edge compression. This condition is achieved by initially heating the glass, then cooling both surfaces rapidly. This leaves the centre glass thickness relatively hot compared to the outside surfaces. As the centre thickness cools, it forces the surfaces and edges into compression. In practice wind pressure, impact and thermal stress (and other applied loads) must first overcome this compression before there is possibility of fracture.

The Toughening Process

This is a true Safety Glass to AS1288/2208/2080. It begins as ordinary annealed glass, is cut to the exact finished size, uniformly heated to 700+ °C then cooled rapidly by blowing air on both sides. The outer surfaces cool faster than the core, and permanent stresses are built up. After toughening, the glass can have up to 5 times its original strength. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt fragments, reducing the risk of serious injury. Typically when broken the whole pane crazes and falls out in pieces. Toughened glass products cannot be cut, drilled or shaped – all such work must be completed before toughening is carried out. Toughened glass can be identified by its edge bevels introduced during preparation to avoid localised stress cracking, characteristic “leopard spots” seen in certain lighting conditions, and a manufacturer’s stamp in the corner stating its AS1288/2208/2080 grade. Various scientific identification techniques use polarised and ultra-violet light sources, or a laboratory Differential Surface Refractometer can compare optical distortions between the “fringes” occurring during toughening.

Toughened Glass

Safety

Safety of toughened glass comes from its inherent strength, and from its unique fracture pattern when broken. When fully toughened glass breaks, the glass fractures into small relatively harmless fragments. Fully toughened glass is a Grade A safety Glass when manufactured to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 2208:1996: ‘Safety Glazing Materials in Buildings’. The selection of which type and thickness of glass should be made in accordance to AS 1288-2006 ‘Glass in Buildings – Selection and Installation’. Applicable building codes should also be checked for specific information and requirements.

Handling and Installation

Toughened glass should be handled carefully as improper handling and/or installation may produce edge damage. A delayed breakage may ensue when edge damage toughened glass is subjected to a moderate thermal or mechanical stress. Full penetration of the compression layer will produce instantaneous total fragmentation. Toughened glass can therefore not be cut or modified following the toughening process.

Imperfections

Inclusions in glass originate from impurities in the original batch or cullet, or from the furnace refractories. Common forms of inclusions include aluminous stones, ironstones and silicon. Nickel sulphide inclusions are microscopic defects in the glass that may cause breakages. A delayed breakage may occur when a nickel sulphide inclusions is present near the centre of the glass thickness, and the surrounding atmosphere ‘grows’ this inclusion to the point of breakage.

Visual Appearance

Toughened glass possesses the basic optical qualities of annealed glass. The induced stress caused during manufacture may Sometimes produce a slight bow or warp in the finished product. The glass may also contain very slight roller wave caused by contact with the quenching rollers in the manufacturing process. The air quench area can also be seen through polarized glass and appear as arrays of iridescent spots or lines. Under some lighting conditions these patterns can be seen in ordinary light. Waterjet Cutting

Operation

The cutter is commonly connected to a high-pressure water pump where the water is then ejected from the nozzle, cutting through the material by spraying it with the jet of high-speed water. Additives in the form of suspended grit or other abrasives, such as garnet and aluminum oxide, can assist in this process. Because the nature of the cutting stream can be easily modified, water jets can be used to cut diverse materials, from prepared foods to metals. There are few materials that cannot be effectively cut with a water jet cutter; one of these is tempered glass, which shatters when cut, regardless of the cutting technology used. Certain ceramics are also resistant to water jet cutting. Water jet cuts are not typically limited by the thickness of the material, and are capable of cutting materials over eighteen inches (45 cm) thick. The penetrating power of these tools has led to the exploration of their use as anti-tank weapons but, due to their short range and the advent of composite armour, research was discontinued.

Benefits

An important benefit of the water jet cutter is the ability to cut material without interfering with the material’s inherent structure as there is no “heat-affected zone” or HAZ. Waterjet is considered a “green” technology. Waterjets produce no hazardous waste, reducing waste disposal costs. They can cut off large pieces of reusable scrap material that might have been lost using traditional cutting methods. Parts can be closely nested to maximize material use, and the waterjet saves material by creating very little kerf. Waterjets use very little water (from 2 litres to approximately 4 litres per minute depending on cutting head orifice size), and the water that is used can be recycled using a closed-looped system. Waste water usually is clean enough to filter and dispose of down a drain. The garnet abrasive is a non-toxic natural substance that can be recycled for repeated use. Garnet usually can be disposed of in a landfill. Waterjets also eliminate airborne dust particles, smoke, fumes, and contaminates from cutting materials such as asbestos and fiberglass. This greatly improves the work environment and reduces problems arising from operator exposure.

Versatility

The versatility of the waterjet allows it to be used in nearly every industry. There are many different materials that the waterjet can cut. Some of them have unique characteristics that require special attention when cutting. Each material cut will have some unique characteristics that have to be taken into account.

Materials commonly cut with waterjet include rubber, foam, plastics, composites, stone, tile, metals, food, paper and much more. The only materials that cannot be cut with waterjet are tempered glass, diamonds and certain ceramics.

Process

There are six main process characteristics to water jet cutting:

  1. Uses a high velocity stream of abrasive particles suspended in a stream of Ultra High Pressure Water (30,000 – 90,000 psi) which is produced by a Waterjet Intensifier Pump
  2. Is used for machining a large array of materials, including heat-sensitive, delicate or very hard materials.
  3. Produces no heat damage to workpiece surface or edges.
  4. Nozzles are typically made of sintered boride.
  5. Produces a taper of less than 1 degree on most cuts, which can be reduced or eliminated entirely by slowing down the cut process.
  6. Distance of nozzle from workpiece affects the size of the kerf and the removal rate of material. Typical distance is 10mm.Temperature is not as much of a factor.
